On Windows 7 you can install free BaseCamp, which is some kind of replacement for Mapsource: Once you have BaseCamp running, then you can install latest Mapsource update: Last step would be to copy maps from old PC. I would do it manually, but i think Javawa GMTK can help you to do it without much tinkering:If you use BaseCamp solely to enable the installation of MapSource you don't need it at all. Start with the last step; once you have started GMTK for the first time, you can install the update version of MapSource without problems. I followed the instructions in that link, and installed the topo maps on the computer. Mapsource now sees those maps, and I am able to load them into the emap. That is all I wanted to do for now.

FWIW, I have bought a nuvi 3590LM recently and am pleased with it. But I still have the old eMap, which I need to load the local TOPO maps into. Currently that task is done with an ancient HP Laptop running Windows XP.

I am trying to eliminate any dependency on that old laptop by installing software on my newer Laptop, running Windows 7. Microsoft makes this difficult. As an aside, I am also working on a way to get an old DOS version of Autocad working on a Windows 7 pc. I am gradually getting there. When I get all the useful stuff off the old laptop, it will be scrapped. As I recall, when I bought the 3 cd set of topo maps, I had difficulty getting Mapsource to recognize it.

Thanks to all who helped.Hello Janet, Now you can run the latest MapSource update from here. It is a major improvement and works perfectly with those older Topo maps. I have been using those old Topo maps since 1999 and often they have info and roads not shown on my newer 24K Topo. The accuracy is not as good as the 24K tho.

To your first question. IMG files are for use in garmin device. Nothing to do with Nero etc. Copy img in Garmin folder from your device and it will work.

My system is windows 8 64bit. I have put the whole folder in different directories to see if that helped, but I keep getting the same error. You can't simply copy files as Mapsource will not know they exist. Yes, Windows 7 still has a registry. The 'old way' to install those CD's on your computer involved manually editing the Windows registry. I no longer have my old version of topo on CD, but am pretty sure MapConverter will do exactly what you want. Just drag all the files from the CD to the program as described at the link I posted.

This will convert the old map to Garmin's new 'gmap' format. You will need to install the new version of Mapsource to use this kind of map however. The gmap format does not rely on the Windows registry - a big improvement IMHO. Drag the folder (or zip archive) with the files to the window of JaVaWa MapConverter; the program will determine whether the collection is useful and which map it is. In most cases JaVaWa MapConverter will be able to decide what the purpose of each of the files is, but sometimes it isn't clear which.img file contains the overview map. In that case you will need to pick the right one. When no error messages are shown you can click 'Convert' or 'Convert & Install'.

If you are using Win 7 now, I don't see the advantage of using an old version of Mapsource. But maybe I'm missing something. Older style Garmin maps are dependent on the Windows registry.
