I think I laughed more than I ever had. He’s a funny guy. He’s a sweet dude,” Nathaniel Rateliff regarding his work with Swift on his band’s eponymous solo album. Most recently, Swift made Other People’s Songs Vol. 1 a 2016 album of covers with Damien Jurado. “To the ether that now carries you, Richard: I’ve never met anyone like you and you changed the way i think about music forever and ever,” Ryan Miller of Guster said, reflecting on Swift’s passing. “What an immense loss, for all of us.

Richard Swift is a very intriguing song-writter. Upon the first few listens you will notice how well he incorporates trumpets and a random assortment of odd sounds like keys with unusual effects into his music. As you have probably already read, Swift is compared to a lo-fi version of Rufus Wainwright, or even Andrew Bird. This is true. During the tour Tweedy invited Swift to record at their Loft studios in Chicago. In October 2007, Swift started his fourth album at the Wilco Loft studios. In April 2008, Secretly Canadian released a double EP named Richard Swift As Onasis. In August 2008, Swift released an EP entitled Ground Trouble Jaw as a free digital download.

Richard Swift sure sounds like a bedroom auteur. He penned all the songwriterly songs and wrote all the whimsical interludes on his first two mini-albums, The Novelist and Walking Without Effort, and handled engineering and artwork duties, and played most of the instruments. He even self-released both of them before signing with Secretly Canadian, which is collecting them as one release, immodestly subtitled The Richard Swift Collection, Vol. That canonical title heralds more to come, and I wouldn't be surprised if he already has his next six albums written and recorded (in fact, his next is planned for early 2006).

“We hit it off right away. Worked really hard.

His untimely passing comes only a month after Swift had been hospitalized from an undisclosed “life-threatening condition,” which prompted him to create for his medical bills. Update – July 9th: According to a statement from his family, Swift “suffered from alcohol addiction, and it’s ultimately what took his life.” The statement adds, “With the support of family and friends and the assistance of MusiCares, Richard had checked himself into rehab for multiple stays over the past two years, but his body gave out before he could overcome the disease. He was diagnosed with hepatitis and liver and kidney distress in June. Multiple hospitals worked to help stabilize him over the course of that month, but his body was unable to heal and, per his wishes and with his family’s consent, he was moved to hospice care.” Born in California and raised across the rural confines of Northern Minnesota and Southeastern Utah, Swift returned to his birthplace in the early aughts, where he made a name for himself at Huntington Beach’s Green Room recording studio. During his off hours, he carved out his own solo records — Walking Without Effort and The Novelist — which he would self-release to limited copies before signing with Secretly Canadian to re-release both as The Richard Swift Collection Vol. However, it was 2007’s Dressed Up for the Letdown that really turned the right heads, particularly Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy, who invited Swift to not only tour with the band but record at their own Chicago studio, The Loft.

In the wake of today’s news, his friend and collaborator in The Black Keys and The Arcs, Dan Auerbach, paid homage to him this morning via Instagram.

He will be missed,” the keyboardist, who also played a few days with The Arcs, said. “The times I’ve had with him will never be forgotten and will always be inspiring.” Swift also put out seven solo releases between 2005 and 2010, and The Novelist and Walking Without Effort.

Less self-consciously ambitious but more dramatically realized, * Walking Without Effort collects all the urbane lyrics and drawn-out choruses of The Novelist, but loses the glued-on razzmatazz. Sounding like both Jakob Dylan and Randy Newman, Swift seems much more at home among the 70s-pop guitars, Brian Wilson wood-block percussion, and Jon Brion reeds. He wastes no time proving his mettle on 'Half Lit' and 'As I Go', two diagonal rays of sunny pop whose horns and handclaps make their dark, desperate lyrics sound casual. Before closing with the refined valedictions of 'Not Wasting Time' and 'Beautifulheart', Swift hits his peak with 'Losing Sleep', which handily achieves all of Swift's ambitions, not so much for its lush backing vocals or its sophisticated, crescendoing arrangement than for its elegant melody and heartfelt lyrics-- the two elements to anticipate most on the inevitable Vol.

From 2002 to 2005, he released four small pressings of 'properly manufactured' singles via. Swift also released The Novelist in 2003 and Walking Without Effort (recorded in 2001) in 2005 and combined the two albums to create the double-disc The Richard Swift Collection Vol. 1 released by Leftwing Recordings in August 2004. He signed to indie label, who then re-released the Collection in 2005. In 2007, Secretly Canadian and issued Swift's proper follow-up album, Dressed Up For the Letdown. Later in the year Swift met frontman during a taping of the program. Tweedy asked Swift to support Wilco on their US tour.

Just to bring these two records into existence requires a forceful willpower and an unflagging self-confidence, and for better or worse, the two albums reflect a serious perfectionist streak. The Novelist is the more distinctive of the two: as the title suggests, the album wears its concept on its sleeve, even spelling it out on the title track: 'I try to write a book each time I speak.' As if to conjure visions of the cardigan-wearing artist toiling at his trusty typewriter, Swift dolls up the songs in dapper pre-rock accessories that suggest a Roaring Twenties setting. 'Lady Day' floats on a subdued samba and lofty vocals, 'Sadsong St.' Features a ukulele, and 'Lovely Night' is dark cabaret pop bristling with spiky clarinets.

Yet for all the trappings, Swift sounds a little indistinct, like a straight Rufus Wainwright. That pop scion's entire identity is bound up in the musical styles he appropriates to express gay desire-- or re-appropriates, since many of these genres originally expressed gay desire.
