However, I have seen counterfeiters store listing ligne 1's but the pictures appeared to be stock pictures of actual ligne 1's, listed around $30-50. My guess is that they'd end up sending you a solid-patterned fake ligne 2 or something that doesn't entirely resemble a ligne 1.
Even the fakes sometimes have both the inner and outer box, however on a real outer-box, there's generally a sticker with a bar code and the model name describing your model. It's probably possible that retailers mix up the boxes, so this might not always be correct, but realistically you should be getting a box with a label describing your lighter on it. NA collector will want a gun that has not been modified since it left the factory, and for a fee the Cody Museum will research the old records and give a letter stating the exact original configuration, when it was manufactured, and sometimes when and where it was shipped from the factory. Where did you get it from? It should obviously be made of genuine materials (silver, black chinese laquer, etc.). It should have all of the stamps and trade marks on the bottom. It should accept the genuine refills tubes. Check under the screw in cover on the bottom and sse if there is a color present. This will indicate which refill it accepts.
New old stock can often be found for $200-400 range. Damaged/heavily used ones can sell for extremely cheap sometimes - $30 - 50. Note that there's a few generations of Ligne 1's, the oldest have a slot on the fuel cap and a older style flame adjuster valve.

I broke the valve on one of mine that way after successfully refueling it for over a year. I was traveling a lot, and had a hard time finding Dupont fuel cartridges, so I got in the practice of using whatever butane I could find. Don't do this. Even if you've got practice at it, you'll probably break your lighter eventually and they're expensive to fix. There are metal screw-in adapters available, which will work just fine, too.

This is generally only seen with certain plating/finish options, typically diamond-head patterns in palladium. However, the tell-tale sign as to whether it's a newer or older Ligne 1 is always the flame height adjuster valve. The newer lighters with the slot generally have newer markings, and tend to use one of the heavier platings, like this one.

Older ones had a shorter slant. I've been able to use this method of determining fakes without having to actually see the bottom of a lighter, which is useful if you're buying online Visual Cues. On some real ligne 2's it looks like it's slanting back up if the photo is at a slight angle, but they should taper downward and stay relatively the same size until the end.
They may have been made by Crescent Fire Arms, WH Davenport Arms, Iver Johnson, Harrington & Richardson, or Stevens. Being a.410 would suggest manufacture sometime after WWI and I believe HSB&Co ended operations sometime in the 1960s.

In terms of age, there's not as much that varies between the ligne 2 and gatsby models over the years, generally condition and desirability of the finish is going to be more important than age alone. As mentioned before when identify fakes, the older models tend to have shorter ridging on the flint area, but I have not seen this to effect the value, especially if the condition is good. Mechanically and functionally they are all pretty much identical to my best knowledge. Limited Editions Limited editions are generally not cheap, regardless of whether it's ligne 1 or ligne 2. While in general ligne 1's are less expensive, the design can easily make up for it. It's rare that you will see a limited edition under $500, and usually they will sell for $800 at a minimum. Commonly counterfeited limited editions include the james bond 007 lighter with the bullet spark wheel, and many variants of engraved + lacquered lighters, generally resembling art deco, medici, nuevo mundo and the like.

Just remember, the older the lighter, the more likely it is to be leaky / needing repairs, and the oldest ligne 1's can be significantly older than the oldest ligne 2's. Even a leaky lighter can still often light, so just because there's a picture of it with a lit flame does not mean the lighter is leak-free.
Again, these are coded as to the type of lighter indicated by the color under the fill cap. So, once you have either a metal adapter or a Dupont cartridge that fits your lighter, remove the fill cap, lightly press down on the valve stem to release any remaining gas and air which may have leaked in, and then firmly screw in either the gas cartridge or the adapter. Any limited edition ST Dupont will have a serial stating that item's number in the run, e.g. 1006 / 2500 and if you see an ordinary stamp on any limited edition item, it's a fake. If it says ' laque de chine ' it stands to reason the item should have some Chinese lacquer on it and not be plain gold or silver. If you do a search for Dupont replica sites, many examples of fakes can be found. Some imitate limited edition items, others don't resemble any Dupont ever made. It should be easy to tell if the person is a retailer or not and if they are not, it's unlikely all those name brand items would be coming from the same place. There's also a lot of fake dupont pens on ebay, so if they also are selling tons of dupont pens very cheaply, this might also be a sign. Most people selling counterfeit Ligne 2's will list them between $50 and $250, the pictures and text generally look stock, and they'll often have stock text regarding the lighters, like 'Refill: Gold' or 'Refill: Yellow' somewhere, even if it's a lighter that shouldn't have a yellow refill.

Some counterfeits were never real designs at all, but resemble a limited edition design. Most if not all real limited editions can be found at for reference. I've also heard of custom-order dupont lighters, typically in smaller batches between 100-300, often for a specific purpose, generally a company, brand or event of some type. These are not very common and I'd imagine the person selling it would more often than not be the original owner, or know some history about it to prove it's authenticity.
