I don't find it a resolution at all. 'Everyone wants two of them and half of everyone else who's around.' This is the thesis to the album for me. We are so intent on answering our own questions and understanding our own enigma, that we forget how essential human interaction is. The result of this pursuit for understanding is unresolved isolation. Removed from daily life, he 'can't be blamed for nothing anymore.' I've always seen this album to be a pondering about the vastness of the universe versus the impermanence and melancholy of human life.

Feedback, thoughts, and your own opinions are greatly appreciated • Read my last album explanation • Listen to the full album Everything keeping me together is falling apart. I've got this thing that I consider my only art: Fucking people over. So begins an album which tells the story of a man (who I'll call Isaac), who rather than being the one doing the fucking, gets kicked over and over again.

In Third Planet, Isaac remarked that her heart was dripping pitch and made of wood, in The Stars are Projectors he realizes that he was the one with the heavy, wooden heart all along. He also comes to grips with politicians, who are only trying to find the best way to get things done. With the rest of his time, Isaac wonders about the universe, and how it was actually created. He's abandoned his faith in God by this time, so he searches for other answers. Wild Pack Of Family Dogs serves as a flashback to Isaac as a kid. When he was young, a pack of dogs came through his neighbourhood, and his dad scared them off.

That was hidden in a math equation, and that's this: where do circles begin?' Both hint at an interest of reincarnation; or a spirituality that is very anti-religion. I Came As A Rat and Life Like Weeds also hint at the reincarnation theme, if not in a religious sense then at least hinting at infinite processes, the universe being a perpetual motion machine. Plenty of songs on their other albums hint at this as well (in my opinion: Interstate 8, Parting Of The Sensory, People As Places As People, Never Ending Math Equation, Night On The Sun-more focusing on the impermanence of life and our place in the universe IMO, So Much Beauty In Dirt. And many more!). Modest Mouse has always had always had such an incredible view on our current place in life.

As he says, It's hard to remember, it's hard to remember We're alive, for the first time. It's hard to remember, it's hard to remember We're alive, for the last time. It's hard to remember, it's hard to remember To live, before you die It's hard to remember, it's hard to remember When it takes, such a long time In Life Like Weeds, to his ex-girlfriend, he asserts that 'you're just a rock to me.' And he wishes he could have said everything he meant to say. Isaac wishes he could have said how much he loved her, how he wishes that he hadn't have gotten so angry at her.

Of course, the baggage he has refuses to leave him Alone Down There, and he can't stop thinking. The voice inside his head keeps telling him that he was the one who was wrong all along, and in The Stars Are Projectors, he starts to come to grips with his faults. Isaac goes through his laundry-list of problems, and assigns blame where it's due. He looks to the stars for guidance as he thinks things through. He realizes that she had it harder than he could have imagined at the time, and it was him who pushed her away, not the other way around.

I think the album is more about loneliness and making yourself stand out. Take The Stars are Projectors for instance. The idea of a star projecting your life down on earth is suppose to make you feel special as it relates your life to a star. However, it's complicated because there are millions of stars and millions of lives, which begs the question, how are you special or unique compared to all these other lives. On the contrary, the moon and Antarctica are two places man can realistically go that are completely deserted.

Despite the fans' common concern that the switch to a major record label would change the band's unique sound, Isaac Brock assured fans that this would not be the case, 'I don't think the new album is at all overpolished or anything. We spent more time getting crazy sounds than making things sound polished.

There is no human contact yet your uniqueness goes unheard of even if you are the only individual there. This part of the album is told through the Cold Part and Alone Down there. The album reaches a resolution though with songs like Paper Thin Walls which show a connection between human beings.

Deck and Brock fell out of touch shortly thereafter, but reconnected a few years later, when Brock invited Califone (which included several members of Deck's band Red Red Meat) to hit the road as Modest Mouse's opening act. The album was the first project to be recorded in Clava Studios in Chicago.

I think they're fucking geniuses! Keep these album concepts coming, it's making me reexamine my favorite band in cool new ways almost a decade after first hearing some of these songs:) • • • •.
